About Wool Sauna Hat

Wool Sauna Hat is a guide to the material: why felted sheep's wool is what a sauna hat should be made of, how to tell it from polyester felt, and how to keep a wool hat thick and soft for years.

Published by a sauna hat brand

This site is published by DIVELUX (DIVELUX Inc., Irvine, California), a brand that sells handmade wool felt sauna hats at diveluxsaunahat.com, on Amazon and on Walmart Marketplace. That means we are not neutral about wool: we chose it for our own hats. You should know that before you read our comparisons, and we work to keep the material facts accurate whichever brand you end up buying.

What you will find here

  • Wool vs everything else: synthetic felt and acrylic, linen, merino, boiled and knitted wool, recycled fibres, and how wool behaves near fire.
  • Your hat, day to day: washing, drying, shrinking, smell, sweat, mould, itch and allergies, and how long a hat lasts.
  • How felt works: wet felting, lanolin, felt thickness, and why a sauna hat is felted rather than knitted.

How the guides are put together

We write from two sources: what we know from making and selling wool felt hats, and well-established facts about wool fibre and textiles. Where a figure varies between sources, such as the temperature at which wool ignites, we give a range and say it is approximate. We do not report tests we have not run, and we do not make health claims for wool. Care advice is the same in every guide: hand wash in cool, room-temperature water, press the water out without wringing, reshape and air dry away from heaters, and never use a washing machine or tumble dryer. Each guide shows the date of its last update.

About our own hats

DIVELUX hats are 100% natural felted wool, with no polyester and no blends. They are wet-felted and stitched by hand at our partner workshop in Ukraine, in the Eastern European banya tradition, to a thickness of about 4 to 5 mm. There are seven colours, undyed white and grey wool with dyed trims on some, in classic and bucket shapes. One size fits heads up to 24 in (61 cm), and the felt settles to your head after a few sessions. Each hat is $21.99 with free US shipping and 30-day returns. For choosing and wearing a hat in the hot room, see our sister site Sauna Hats Guide.
